1. How did you get into YGO, and GX specifically? What do you like about it?
Well. I got into YGO years ago because, like most other things I liked at that stage, my brother liked it. He started to watch it first and eventually I decided I liked it as well, not for duelling but for the characters themselves. He got over it by the fourth/fifth season but I still enjoyed it and continued to watch it. I then discovered fanfiction and never got out of it. ^^
My watching and liking of GX was a lot more complicated, which I think I have said before elsewhere. (It does amuse me though.) I started to watch it when it first came out and I do remember liking it. I think I only stopped because it was on too late in the morning and I had to leave for the bus by the time it was on. For some reason I didn't get back into it until I was randomly flicking through Cartoonnetwork one night and GX was on. It was the episode where Juudai (though at this stage it was the dub) went into Neospace and it immediately caught my attention. I really like the whole concept of Light and Dark and the fight and dichotomy between them (and the Elements but that doesn't really play a role in this) and that episode had the Light as evil and the Dark as good, which is something I use in my own fiction and just love to see. So that hooked me. Season 2 ended and it went back to the start or stopped running, I can't remember but the point is I stopped watching it again. It was on late at night and school started again and no one wanted the disk space full of my GX recordings so I stopped.
Another night months later I was again flicking through the channels and GX was on. Same time just a different season. This time it was episode 129, the one where Johan finds Rainbow Dragon and Martin!Yubel is duelling Juudai. Since a lot of the characters weren't the ones I remembered I was intrigued as to who on earth they were, especially Martin because although he was clearly a boy he sometimes spoke with a girls voice. I wanted to know what was up with that so I watched part of the season and then went to youtube I think. This part I can't really remember (and yet it must have been this year. Well it confuses even me.) But not too long after that I saw episode 144 on TV and as it was clear Juudai had done something really, really bad (and who were Jim and Axel again?) it was then I saw the whole season on youtube (and eventually surpassed the showing on TV actually) and somewhere along the line I developed a real liking for Johan, which spurred me through season 4 because he was in the opening so whenwouldheappear?
Until then I had been watching the dub. So then I watched season 4 and remembered that, oh yeah. There is no dub of this season. Which was good it turns out because after I watched season 4 I went back and rewatched season 3, but this time subbed to get the difference between the two versions because the dub hadn’t been that bad? Comparatively it was but it could have been a lot worse.
To answer the question yes, that is how I got into GX. It took all of that which is strange because at no point did I ever think 'this is stupid' or not like it. (I then went back and rewatched/watched season one and my God is there a difference. I knew season 3 was darker and edgier but wow. They really did break Juudai into little pieces didn't they.)
Long story short for those who skipped the TL;DR, (and I don't quite blame you) it took me a while and a few random stumbling upons to really get into it although I never disliked it at any point and was always quite fond of it.
As to what I like about each series? Well I liked the characters of DM and I’ve always said I would be happy if the show had no card games and the mythological ties it has is just awesome.
GX I think I’m even more in love with then I ever was with DM, I’ve certainly rewatched it and re read the manga more times then DM already. The early anime is just good for a laugh and its sheer WTF moments and its light heartedness. Again it is the characters and their interactions I like and the show has a lot more of that and a lot less of the duels, especially in season 1. The alchemy references were awesome too. Season 2 I liked for the Light vs Dark and again the characters. Kenzan and Shou are hilarious, as is Manjoume and I haven’t seen this one in a while and am still watching it but I was the season that sucked me back in. Season 3 is my favourite by far, I can rewatch these episode over and over again, it helps I love Johan so much. What I like in particular about this season is the whole fantasy aspect, the Other Words, the fact that Jim is a geologist (which I am currently learning to be. And he’s Australian too, just gets better and better. He is also a really great character on his own.) and Johan makes duelling interesting, though that maybe due to the fact that the Gem Beasts are awesome. Season 4 I can’t really remember as I rushed through that but Kenzan and Rei vs Asuka and Juudai, that episode was not only funny but really good. And I like how it was now darkness vs darkness proving that no one entity or whatever is evil and that it is balance.
The manga is just made of pure awesome, everything from the plot, the way the characters are portrayed here (like Shou and his sarcasm and Johan’s little ninja rolls and cute bug obsession. Seriously I’ll love even cockroaches for him due to his enthusiasm for them) and it is just pure love.
(Ok my other answers aren’t as long I swear. I just really, really like GX! Is it obvious? ^^)
2. I've noticed that you only use one icon. I think that's kind of cool, but it's also pretty unusual. Do you have a particular reason for doing so?
Mostly, it just doesn’t occur to me to change it whenever I post most of the time. Although there are a few other reasons that’s mostly it. ^^;
Firstly, I kind of fail when it come to navigating websites and doing stuff on it (my battle with the LJcut was long and tragic and really shouldn't have taken as long as it did but I do fail) so I never looked into changing it. Secondly I'm not going to lie I am pretty lazy so while I still like the icon it stays. And thirdly I'm so use to it now I don't think of changing it although I have uploaded a couple of other pics by now.
Oh wait, there was something else to that. I didn't know how to properly credit for the pics and although I think I know how to now, I still just don’t think of it.
3. What time do you usually wake up in the mornings? What about going to bed?
That depends on what part of the year it is. If it's uni time I usually got up at about 6am because my first bus left at 7:15 and the bus that took me to uni left at 7:50. Though that might change next year as I have my licence now and can drive straight to uni so possibly 7ish.
During the holidays, well my brother keeps waking me at 9ish to drive him to cricket each morning so I don't get to sleep as late as I like most days. If I can it's about 12 or 1ish but only because I go to bed rather late.
Which leads me to bedtimes. Term time it's about 12ish. Holidays anywhere from 1:30ish to 3ish depending on if I have to drive my brother or if (and this happens far more often) I'm reading something or watching anime. Either way I go to be rather late. ^^; Which I probably shouldn't do during term time but meh.
4. What type of music do you typically listen to? If you can't choose a genre, what are some bands and/or songs you enjoy?
Rock. I love rock, and other genres associated with it because really, a bands style is fluid and sometimes there is a really fine line between genres. That being said although I prefer it there are very few styles I don't like and I do quite like some country (the Eagles, Van Morrison, Gordon Lightfoot) and on the other side of the spectrum emo and other such stuff and a lot of things in between.
I'll pretty much listen to anything, although some newer pop and R&B doesn't quite do it for me. I generally like drums and guitars in my music.
Currently my favourite bands are Fall Out Boy, Paramore, Nickelback and Panic! At the Disco but I like a lot of things (with over 4000 songs on my itunes there is defiantly some variety in there.) I’m also super fond of the GX (and a couple of DM and 5Ds) openings and endings. Much love for them!
5. You write fanfiction. Do you do that out of a love for the series you're into, or a love for writing, or both? Do you have any serious aspirations with your writing, or are you doing it just for fun?
Both. Defiantly both. Writing fanfiction is what has kept me in the YGO fandom for so long, and although I’m drifting out of DM (well it was my exclusive fandom for about five years, it was certainly time for a change) it is my love for the show that makes me want to write about it. I leaped into GX fanfiction during my rewatch of the sub at episode 130, where Johan attacks the Sacred Beasts and allows everyone to get back to their world. There was something about that scene and what I knew resulted of it that made me want to extrapolate and expand on it and I had to write about it. Thus my first GX_100 was born. From there it was easier writing in the new fandom. (Although going from DM to GX isn't such a dramatic change.)
I mostly write for fun. There is an original novel I would like to eventually write one day, but so far it is far to complex and not thought out enough to do so. And I also need an older perspective to write some of it so that shall have to wait until I'm a Geologist in some small town or random location or something. (This is where my love of the Elements and the idea of them being in Realms comes into play. I also classify Light and Dark (and Fate) as Elements which is one of the things that hooked me into GX.)
And just when I thought I was mastering the art of writing concisely too. If anyone managed to read all that well done. I still really, really love GX though. I could probably write more too, but that would be a tangent, much like this one actually so if anyone would like an interview just reply to this. I’ll think of some interesting questions and stop writing now. ^^
